(If you are interested in this show, PLEASE read the corrections below the announcement!)

The Lafayette Art Association will host the 24th Annual “Kids Are Artists, Too!”/aka “Cupcakes Royale,” a regional exhibition/competition for young people. This spring, students in preschool through 8th grade may submit only 1 piece of artwork to the contest which will be held at their new location: 1008 East Saint Mary Blvd. in the Oil Center (between Coolidge & Harding).

The original artwork may be either 3-D (free-standing) or 2-D (framed with wire & eyescrews attached in back or unframed with clothespins provided by the gallery) ready for hanging on their grid in any medium or mixed-media.

Note that the dates to enter are earlier than usual this year: April 6-9 and April 13-16, noon until 5 p.m. No entry fee. The show will hang April 27-May 14, 2010 with a closing reception on Fri. May 14th from 5:30-6:00 p.m.

In the past, all students who participated received both a certificate & a purple ribbon for their efforts. Judges awarded additional ribbons in 6 different age/grade divisions as well as Best of Show. Homeschoolers have been very well-represented in the past. Have fun being creative!

Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from noon until 5 p.m. Admission is free for all ages and open to the public. For more information call the Lafayette Art Association volunteers (Ms. Sara or Ms. Ty) during business hours at (337) 269-0363.

CORRECTIONS:
Please note the following 4 changes to the upcoming 24th Annual “Kids Are Artists, Too!” youth art show–these changes just came to my attention while visiting the Lafayette Art Association gallery on Friday, February 26th at 4:00 p.m.:

1. The new submit dates are March 23, 24, 25, 26, 30, 31, April 1 and 2 between noon and 5:30 p.m. at 1008 East Saint Mary Blvd. I was told that it was necessary to move the dates up due to an earlier-than-usual closing of area public schools for summer break. Remember that each student in pre-school through 8th grade mayenter only one piece of original artwork.

2. The new exhibit dates are April 13-16, April 20-23 and April 27-30.

3. The new closing reception date is Friday, April 30th from 5:30 until 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited.

4. Finally, the gallery will NOT provide clothespins for hanging artwork this year–as previously stated–but it asks all artists to attach a short length of string or wire across the reverse side of their framed or unframed 2-D work. Hooks, which will be provided, will be used to display artwork on their grids.

Please note these 4 changes on your calendar today since reminders might not be re-run before the deadlines/event. For more information, please call the LAA Gallery @ 269-0363 any Tuesday through Friday between noon and 5:30 p.m.

Most children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or just getting around, these children are at risk.

Walking is often the primary mode of transportation in developing countries. Children can walk for miles to get food, water, shelter and medical help. Wearing shoes literally enables them to walk distances that aren’t possible barefoot.

Wearing shoes prevents feet from getting cuts and sores on unsafe roads and from contaminated soil. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected. The leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted parasites which penetrate the skin through open sores. Wearing shoes can prevent this and the risk of amputation.

Many times children can’t attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. If they don’t receive an education, they don’t have the opportunity to realize their potential.

There is one simple solution…SHOES!
